Videos – Busting Development Myths in Nepal with Data

To help dispel development myths in Nepal and encourage more widespread interest in data as evidence for development, the D4D Program supported Bikas Udhyami to develop and launch a series of short videos.

With funding from the D4D program Bikas Udhyami developed a series of seven short videos that use data to demystify critical aspects of Nepal’s development. The videos present data and statistics on development in an engaging way that enables citizens to grasp difficult data and statistical concepts and draw their own conclusions from these. The videos address important topics such as poverty and inequality; the demographic dividend; the role of media as watchdog; energy; manufacturing; and violence against women. The videos are inspired by the work of Hans Rosling, world renowned statistician and founder of the Gapminder Foundation. The videos were developed with the technical assistance of the Central Bureau of Statistics and are intended to generate more public interest around data and statistics to enhance people’s understanding of key issues related to Nepal’s development.

The videos were launched in November 2017 at Bikas Udhyami’s ‘Nepal in Data Evening’ which featured a Guest Lecture by the Gapminder Foundation and a panel discussion with the DFID Country Representative, CBS Director, and video hosts. The event was attended by more than 300 participants from government, development agencies, civil society organizations, academia and students.
